Sabhan Adam

Artist’s Statement

Nothing is steady for Sabhan Adam, who throws tar and pigments on canvas with passionate energy. He brings to life hybrid creatures that are portraits of the secret metamorphoses of the inner body as it is transformed into wild, animalistic beauty. “In order to paint, I need to be angry,” he has said. His work, however, takes no political side, but represents the earth-shattering exposure of a humanity ridden with uncertainty and torn between despair and wonder, power and misery.

Sabhan Adam was born in 1972 in Hassakeh, Syria. Self-taught, he began painting at the age of 17. In 1999, he lived at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. He now lives in Syria, and has exhibited in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. His work will be exhibited during the ArtParis ArtFair 2015 (26-29 mai 2015) in Grand Palais, Paris. From September 1st to 26th, 2015, Galerie Polad Hardouin will host a new Sabhan Adam solo exhibition. A group show including his work and curated by Victoria Chenivesse, “Kitsch ou pas kitsch,” will appear in the Institut des Cultures d’Islam in Paris from September 2015 to January 2016.
